Michelle was raised in Detroit and her musical adventures began at a small private school in Redford, where music was a big part of learning for every student. She participated in school and church choirs, and even tried to pick up the clarinet for a while (unsuccessfully).
In middle school and high school, Michelle's love for music and performing grew and she began to take part in musical theater. She found that she was happiest on stage and decided that music was her calling. She appeared in shows such as "Grease", "Bye-Bye, Birdie", and "Fiddler on the Roof", and played the role of Adelaide in "Guys and Dolls". Michelle was also selected for Regional and State Honors Choirs and spent two weeks at the esteemed Interlochen Arts camp in northern Michigan. Her life surrounded around music even then, teaching music in vacation bible schools and finding any way she could to use her talent.
In the fall of 1995, Michelle received a full ride scholarship to Wayne State University and enrolled in the musical theater program there. She studied for a short while under acclaimed vocal coaches like Francis Brockington, and was a member of the WSU Concert Chorale.
Early in 1998, Michelle began singing in a band called Sugar Pill (later re-named Monkey Shine) and discovered a talent for rock 'n' roll, this time performing as herself. She was introduced to the members of the Killer Flamingos at Falls Lounge shortly after and was impressed by their talent, energy and reputation (and basically bothered the heck out of Darren and Steve... "you know you want a female singer"). When Monkey Shine broke up early in 2000, Michelle was excited to be asked to join her friends Darren and Steve in the reforming of the New Killer Flamingos.
